5. Conclusion

5.1 Summary of findings
Crushed ice works best with a lower temperature and higher surface area in contact with the test tube. Any concentration of salt works. -10 degrees celsius can freeze any solution. It is important to make sure that the melted water is removed. The water will raise the temperature by a little but it is enough to affect the results.

5.2 Practical Applications
From our project, countries that have a large amount of snowfall on a yearly basis or people trying to make salty ice cream make use of freezing point depression. It demonstrates why people in America and Canada pour salt on the roads before ploughing to melt the ice on the road, thus ensuring that the roads would be safer to travel on which lowers the chances of vehicles skidding on the icy surface of the road. It also causes water to freeze at a lower temperature so it is useful for making homemade ice cream as it will cool the ice cream more effectively.

5.3 Areas for further study
As stated above, we found out that sawdust is another insulator of heat and when it is mixed with ice, it would from a mixture called pykrete, consists of 14 percent sawdust or other wood pulp and 86 percent ice, which has a low thermal conductivity, thus preventing ice from melting too quickly. We also were considering other materials like sugar to see if it is more effective at reducing the freezing temperature of water as sugar is also able to reduce the freezing temperature of water.
